EXAMPLE: 28mm Test Batch, Medjai Arab Foot - The Pharoah's Guard

This commission was a test group of figures to represent the Medjai - also known as the Pharaoh's Guard - for a planned for Egyptian Undead Adventures series of games! These are 'Hollywood' style interpretations of the Medjai tribesmen, used by the Pharaohs as their personal bodyguards.

The figures were sent to SAS Painting Services unbuilt and with a specification to do 6 x Foot figures dressed in black with Indigo Blue sashes, scarves and trousers etc. The customer specifically asked us to build the figures from scratch, paint and base.

Completed group of 6 x figures, including Standard Bearer and Musician

According to Hollywood (and specifically the film 'The Mummy'), the Medjai are the Pharaoh's sacred bodyguards, a group who have watched over and guarded Hamunaptra (the Ancient Egyptian City of the Dead) for centuries. They are sworn to do all in their power to prevent the resurrection of the crazy High Priest Imhotep, who wants to use the bodies of the dead as an army to do his evil bidding .

Possible Command Group - Standard Bearer, Leader & Musician,
showing black robes and dark blue turbans and sashes quite well

These figures were built from a sprue of Perry Afghans and Gripping Beast Arabs supplied by the customer, SAS Painting Services built the figures, removed mould lines and generally applied TLC to each figure to make it ready to paint. We superglued each figure to MDF bases supplied by the customer.

After a white undercoat, the flesh was painted and given a sepia wash when dry. Later the robes of these guys were painted dark grey. Turbans and Sashes were painted a bright blue. The robes were then given a couple of Dark Tone washes to give a shaded black look and the blue areas were also given a black wash to add shading  and mute the blue colour a little, making it look Indigo.

The three rank and file Medjai Warriors.

The flag was painted sky blue and then washed blue, before highlighting again in sky blue basis the Customer's instructions.

Basing was fine sand and dried rocky tufts of dried grass to fit in with the general desert feel for this project.

EXAMPLE: Warhamer Fantasy Black Orcs

In this example - I have been working on this unit of 10 x Plastic Warhammer Black Orcs, the commission included standard basing and three command figures (Boss, Musician & Standard Bearer)

Completed unit of 10 Black Orcs

The commission was for Black Orcs in Red Armour, based with our standard basing solution - fine sand and electrostatic grass.

Boss & Standard Bearer plus three of the Black Orc Boyz

A spray of Black undercoat with a Grey then White highlight applied, followed by base Goblin Green (Army Painter) and Flat Red (Vallejo) gave the base colours.

Centre we can see the Musician, with a drum,
alongside a number of other Black Orcs

Green ink wash was applied to the Skin areas and then Strong Tone and Red Wash (Army Painter) inks to the armour areas. I then dry brushed with a brighter red, followed by a wash to the amour with Sepia Ink (Citadel) to make it 'pop'. Details added as appropriate - Oily Steel & Brass (Vallejo) for metal work, browns for wood & Ivory for teeth, claws & horns etc

A final view of some of the completed unit

I gave the armour a light dry brush of silver to suggest wear and tear on the kit and when dry all were given a matt varnish finish (Windsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic).

I spent some extra time on the standard and the musician's drum to add detail but these followed the same principles noted above. Overall these Black Orcs are VERY RED!

Basing was done in my usual manner with Electrostatic grass and fine sand.

PRICING

Figures were supplied by the customer pre built and prepared, standard basing was requested.

FIGURE BUILD & PREPARATION

The customer should provide the figures to SAS Painting Services in the condition that they wish the figures to be painted. Flash should be removed and moulding lines filed away by the customer.

SAS Painting Services do provide a figure preparation option but this will cost £1 per figure.

Similarly 28mm plastic figures should be constructed & prepared before sending to SAS Painting Services unless you wish to engage us in our Figure Build service which will cost £1.50 per figure. This should all be agreed before the commission is accepted to avoid disappointment and unnecessary wrangling upon completion of the commission.

HOW IT WORKS

Our aim is to have a 6 week turn around on all commissions, this may mean that commissions will be scheduled to start at a date in the future - depending on current workloads. This will be agreed in advance with all customers.

Please note - due to the ongoing success of my business 6+ weeks turnaround on some commissions may be is more realistic.

To address this - large commissions may be split into batches to ensure timelines are reasonable for all customer and the painting team. Again this will be agreed in advance with the customer.

Once a commission is accepted and timelines and costs agreed by the customer, the customer must post the figures, at their own cost, to SAS Painting Services. Additionally a 20% engagement fee will be charged by SAS Painting Services to the customer to secure the time slot in our production schedule, this will be to be charged via Paypal.

POST & PACKING

Before returning any completed commissions the outstanding balance is requested to be paid in full via Paypal. The outstanding balance will include a charge for Postage & Packing, based upon the charges incurred by the customer sending the figures to SAS Painting Services upon our engagement.

SAS Painting Services will of course ensure additional protection for the completed models when posting back to our customers, this will be at our own cost.

We recommend Post Office 2nd Class Signed For deliveries to ensure packages are tracked.
